Living in The Woodlands for the first 18 years of my life, it’s crazy to look back at all the memories I’ve made at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
I saw my first concert, the Spice Girls, at The Pavilion. I had my first dance recital there. I was able to listen to the concerts from my parents’ backyard. My high school graduation even took place there. Having The Pavilion as a neighbor for the first 18 years of my life is something I’ll always be grateful for. Being able to intern here during the 25th Season has been the icing on the cake.
As I go into my senior year of college, I am more prepared than ever (thanks to The Pavilion) to start applying for jobs and to become a “grown up” next May. I’ve learned so many things ranging from how to write a public service announcement to how exceptionally great I now am at cutting on a straight line. For anyone who is reading this or for future interns to come, here is a short list of lessons I’ve learned or advice I can give from my time at The Pavilion:
- Ask as many people’s opinion on your assignments as possible. This is how I learned the most! Not everyone has the same opinion, but when you combine each person’s thoughts the finished product will be the best.
- Needle-nose pliers are your friend. When you’re asked to put new inserts in the table tents, take them with you!
- You can never be shy when it comes to taking pictures if you want a good shot!
- The amount of time and hard work that goes into an event is unbelievable, but watching people have fun at the event you put so much time into is the coolest feeling.
- I have mastered skirting a table under a minute.
- Way more time is invested into changing a logo than you would ever think.
- Don’t wear a skirt on show days. Always wear pants that can hold a walkie-talkie!
- You will never believe how many events The Pavilion has had throughout the past 25 seasons. I had a HUGE stack of papers and countless hours of entering data to prove that.
- With that being said, you will never believe how many AWESOME events The Pavilion has had. Seriously, if I could go back to the 1999 season, I would! That stack of papers was the most time consuming, yet favorite office assignment I had.
- A positive attitude will always make your tasks easier and more enjoyable!
There are tons of people I have to thank for making my internship at The Pavilion so wonderful. Working in the marketing department has been so great mainly because of the people in it. From Luke Bryan sing-alongs, to taking selfies with a fake Lionel Richie, being at “work” was always enjoyable.
Courtney Galle, marketing and PR manager, impressed me every day with how knowledgeable she is in this field and how she knows (literally) everybody. Whitney Hough, social media marketing coordinator, has been so fun to learn from and has taught me more than I can say about social media. We also share the same love for puppies and weddings and I’ll miss eating nachos with her on show days. Shannon Wilson, director of marketing and education, has been the best mentor I could have asked for. She is so professional yet still enjoyable to be around. She has provided me with countless lessons to take into the real world. I’ll also miss Leslie Williams, special events and volunteer coordinator, calling me dah-ling (darling) and greeting me/scaring me each day, Heather Reding, human resources manager, pretending she’s ready for me to leave (I know you’ll miss me) and her jumbo bag of Jelly-Belly’s, as well as so many other fantastic people from The Pavilion.
On my first day at The Pavilion, I found a fortune on my desk that said “You are always welcome in a gathering.” I have no idea who put it there or how long it had been there, but I taped it to my monitor that day. It has served as a constant reminder to me how wonderful the people are here and how much I will miss it when I’m gone. I can’t thank The Pavilion enough for giving me an unforgettable summer!
