Music Mondays: Gotye

If you don’t recognize the name Gotye, you might know him as the mind behind “Somebody That I Used to Know.” (If you don’t know that song, you may have been living under a rock.)

The Austrailian songster, whose real name is Wally de Backer, hit the US with his video for “Somebody That I Used to Know” in 2011. It wasn’t until 2012 that the song went viral, all over radio, television, and even YouTube. Both amateur and professional musicians took the song and made it their own with countless covers of the song on YouTube.

Gotye describes himself as “more of a tinkerer” than a musician and that’s easy to hear when listening to his music. (Credit) You can’t pinpoint all of the instruments used in a song in only one listen. There are so many levels that intrigue the mind and pull you down into the song. Gotye’s voice is pure and strong, with a bit of soul and indie rock mixed in.

*Fun fact: Gotye is the first Austrailian artist to hit #1 in the US since Savage Garden in 2000.

Catch Gotye at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Thursday, Oct. 11. That’s this Thursday, so get your tickets fast!
